tl;dr: Store your kopi in a airtight container, kept away from direct sunlight or heat.
Always protect your kopi from direct exposure to air, moisture and heat.
Kopi powder tends to have a long shelf life if kept properly.
If you decide to purchase a large quantity for your own consumption, here’s what you need to look out for:
- Clean container
Like specialty coffee or tea, kopi powder can absorb smell or odor from its surroundings. So make sure you use a clean, odorless container to store your kopi. - Airtight
Exposure to air (mostly oxygen) tends to cause coffee to stale faster. Use an airtight container.
If you’re purchasing your kopi powder in bulk (500g or more), you may want to setup a 2 container system (see below). - Keep away from direct sunlight or heat
Heat breaks down flavor compounds and tends cause coffee to stale faster. You’ll also want to protect your kopi from extreme fluctuations in temperatures.
If you purchase your kopi in bulk, I’d recommend a 2 container storage system:
- Ration a week’s worth of kopi powder in a smaller airtight container. (or 2 weeks, depending on how frequently you brew kopi)
- Put theย rest of your kopi in a ziplock bag with as much air removed, before storing it in an airtight container.ย
- Top up the former once a week.ย
